Life At Its Best

“This isn’t something I ever dreamed of doing, but I love it.” Jill Martin says with a shrug. A former actress who spent nine years in corporate sales at American Express, Martin would indeed seem an unlikely candidate to take over the Hidden Chateau & Gardens, the historic West Hills boutique known for its eclectic inventory of antiques an fine home accessories, and as a charmingly rustic setting for weddings, private par ties and other special events.

Actor, Francis Lederer, who built the structure as horse stables in 1934, is reputed to have modeled it after the San Fernando Mission when his efforts to purchase the real thing were rebuffed. Years later, Lederer’s wife Marion operated it as an art gallery, and eventually it became a retail space where individual merchants could rent stalls to sell their wares. Martin took over last December after a period of tenancy during which she sold show-biz memorabilia and the odd piece of cast-off furniture. “I had a knack for buying an old table for five bucks and refinishing it and making it look like a million”, she says.

Today she’s applying a similar philosophy to the entire property. In addition to sprucing up the grounds to expand her wedding business, Martin has even bigger plans for the future. “I want help Marion Lederer  develop a theatre arts center in the name of her late husband, Francis."

Don’t bet against her, because for Martin running the Hidden Chateau & Gardens isn’t just a job, but a calling, “I don’t know what it was, but something brought me here.” She enthuses, “and I’m so glad it did.”

West Hills – Check out the Hidden Chateau –The mission-style structure with fine stonework out on Sherman Way is one of those buildings you might drive past for years without ever knowing its story. Built as a stable for actor Francis Lederer’s estate, it dates back not the 18th century but to 1934 and is now home to Hidden Chateau & Gardens, with antiques and gift items displayed in the onetime stalls and a garden area for afternoon teas. It’s one of the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments identified in Landmark, LA. Edited by Jeffrey Herr
